About

R. Scott Thure is a Los Angeles–based mixed-media artist whose work explores texture, material, and form through the use of reclaimed wood, paint, and found objects. Rooted in transformation, his practice repurposes discarded and overlooked materials into dimensional compositions that carry both history and presence.

Native to Southern California, Thure draws lasting inspiration from surf culture, coastal landscapes, and a longstanding appreciation for Art Deco design. These influences are evident in his evolving body of work, including his surfboard-inspired collection, where painting, sculpture, and functional design converge.

From an early age, Thure was driven by experimentation and discovery, developing a hands-on approach to creating across a wide range of materials. He studied Graphic Arts at Santa Barbara City College in the mid-1980s and spent years exhibiting his work along the Santa Barbara waterfront, where he built a strong connection to both the artistic community and the public.

His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout California, including in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica, and has appeared in television productions through collaborations with set designers. Over time, his pieces have found homes in private collections across the state and beyond.

With a background in construction, Thure brings a deeply tactile understanding of materials to his practice, working with wood, metal, clay, plexiglass, mosaic tile, and salvaged elements. His process blurs the line between painting and sculpture, often incorporating unexpected forms such as deconstructed surfboards and musical instruments.

Guided by a balance between refinement and rawness, Thure continuously explores new techniques and materials. His work invites viewers to engage beyond the visual—through depth, texture, and movement—capturing the energy that emerges when diverse elements come together in a single composition.
